A beautiful, 19th Century French charger from the area around Rouen in Northern France. It has the distinctive ‘cul noir’, a dark glaze applied to the underside. This glaze was applied to provide added heat protection when the dish sat near hearth fires to keep food warm.
Due to their age and purpose these chargers often show cracks and chips but this example is in wonderful condition with charming crazing to the surface. An elegant addition to any table. Purchased in Paris.
A lovely piece but made to be used and enjoyed.
Diameter 29cm
