18th Century French engraving

£375.00

Lovely hand coloured engraving by French naturalist Francois-Nicholas Martinet (1731- c.1800).

Martinet engraved plates for a number of works on natural history. By 1756 he became engraver for the King’s cabinet, reporting to the Manson Du Roi. His major work was for l’Orthinilogia ,sive Synopsis methodica of Mathurin Jacques Brisson (1760-1763) from which this engraving is taken. Some of his plates have been of importance in the identification of now extinct species.

This engraving was beautifully mounted in the 20thC and we have retained this mount. We have, reframed the engraving in a classic black and gold frame.

This is a really lovely and increasingly rare engraving showing Martinet at his very best.

Please note these engravings were folded when originally published so do have folds. This does not detract from these beautiful images. Please look at the photographs carefully.

Due to the size and value of this item it will need to be sent to you by courier. Please email us your postcode (UK only) and we will obtain a quote. Alternatively, this item may be collected from our studio in Oxfordshire.
